With thanks to John Minchin for this great picture from 1936 that includes his mother Helen Stathis (daughter of the picture theatre proprietor Peter Stathis). She is in the front row in the dark cardigan.

Just a correction, Helen Stathis was the wife of Peter Stathis Junior not the daughter of Peter Stathis Snr.

unless there were two Helen Stathis’, didn’t think of that

I was getting worried there – thought I didn’t know my own mother 😉
Actually in the early 1930s there were 2 girls called Helen Stathis at school in Tumut and were about the same age. They played together in the same “gang”.
The family of “other” Helen (ie not my mother) ran a café in Russell st just along from the theatre. Can anyone remember what it was called?

Just wondering if Brian McQuillen worked at Tumut Primary School?
